Reading skills

Today was our 1st class of RUS 101 – Integrated studio in the school of architecture. The class started by introducing the objective of this subject. The integrated studio is to let students to learn, do, acquire, get and equip with basic tools. Besides, students are able to participate in the development of the built environment.

Besides, the studio also teach students in documenting (text, images), communicating (text, images, models: present, argue, show, exhibit, negotiate), designing (images, models, objects, phototypes, spaces, events, happenings), constructing (a page> a page in history), and serving (serve to the bottom billion or top ten).Its made me thrilled to be involved as the process of learning requires tactful speaking, well-organised presentation, innovation and also non-verbal communication.

What amaze me was, our lecturer Cik Wan didn’t teach us about basic knowledge of architecture, but the reading skill. I believed that what he had taught is something essential to become an architect. Let’s start with :

What is READ??

Too wide to explain, my lecturer gave ton of explanations about reading but I concluded it up as looking with your eyes and absorb with your brain and heart.

Putting reading aside, my lecturer introduced the 6 important elements:

What is INTENTION?

According to Macmillan English Dictionary, intention brings the meaning of a plan in your mind to do something. What after intention?

THE ACT…..

Again, according to Macmillan English Dictionary (That is the only resource I have in hostel), act means to do something for a particular reason or in a particular way. After ones have the intention, they will fulfil it by acting on it. What in my mind is, when a reader feels bored, he/she will think of want to read something, and get a book on the spot. In fact, human beings are greedy, they are prone to act to fulfil their dream, if and only if the dream is affordable.

PRODUCT

Dream achieved = Product

By summing up all above,

                INTENTION --> ACT---> PRODUCT

Besides, he had taught us, to intend something, there must have an ACTOR. An actor must take action not just talk blankly, like what they said action speaks louder than words.

But, an actor must act according to the do and don't. If he/she acts while opposes the laws, then the product will turn into failure. Therefore the RULES play a crucial role in the journey to success. No deception and abide by the rules, then the success is not fake but real one, and you are the big winner that win applauses and praises.

Moreover, SITES are also important while completing the task. On the right time, right place, right action, only the task will be done. For example, a student can’t concentrate on their studies if they are studying in the crowded and noisy place. On the other side, if you place the student in a placid place, their concentration wouldn't be distracted.

In the nutshell, the 6 elements that my lecturer has mentioned are INTENTION, ACT, PRODUCT, ACTOR, RULES and SITES. I believed that these 6 elements will be the key of success for a future architect.
